Mashup Masters returns this week with a meeting of contemporary South African sounds as Lia Butler and XDuppy come together for an exciting new collaboration that blends the smoothness of Neo-Zulu with the attitude of Ampiano. The latest episode sees the two artists step outside their individual musical worlds to explore the possibilities that emerge when Amapiano’s infectious grooves meet the cultural depth and contemporary edge of Neo-Zulu.
For Lia Butler, the collaboration offered an opportunity to experiment with a sound outside her usual creative space. “I loved being able to step outside my comfort zone and explore a sound I wouldn’t normally make. It was a really exciting experience. Working with XDuppy showed me how naturally different sounds can come together when you’re open to experimenting,” she says.
XDuppy similarly embraced the challenge of bringing the two genres together, seeing the episode as an opportunity to showcase the versatility of South African music. “Neo-Zulu and Amapiano come from different places, but there’s a natural connection between them. Working with Lia pushed me creatively, and I think that energy comes through in the music,” he adds.
The collaboration is rooted in the spirit of Mashup Masters: bringing artists with distinct identities together and giving them the freedom to experiment. Rather than simply combining two genres, Lia Butler and XDuppy explore how their influences can interact to create something fresh and unexpected.
The episode forms part of Season 2 of Mashup Masters, which brings together 10 South African artists across five genre mashups. The series continues to spotlight the country’s extraordinary musical diversity while encouraging artists to collaborate beyond the boundaries of their usual genres.
