Trophy has delivered a masterpiece with IAIN [An Extended Version], a seven-track project that’s nothing short of a musical journey. As part of HYPE magazine’s BeatLab segment, we’re committed to reviewing the best, and this project undoubtedly deserves the spotlight. If you haven’t heard it yet, I guarantee by the end of this review, you’ll be hitting the play button.

The album opens with ‘GRANDMA’S TEARS’, an emotionally charged track that immediately sets the tone. Trophy takes a bold risk starting with such a heartfelt song, but it pays off. The voice notes used in place of a traditional hook add an intimate layer, making this one of the most memorable songs of 2024 for me. The production is top-tier, and you can feel Trophy pouring his soul into every bar.

Next is ‘HOOD TALE$’, featuring Orieblxckmaestro, a collaboration that delves into the hustle and drive for success. Trophy’s use of Tswana adds a fresh, captivating flavour, even for those who aren’t fluent in the language. The hook, “Zaka re e beile ko pele my dawg!”(We’ve put money ahead, my dawg!), captures the essence of the grind, while Orieblxckmaestro’s verse seamlessly complements Trophy’s energy.

‘BULL’S EYE’ is a standout collaboration that clicks from the very first beat. Featuring Mass The Difference, the track showcases an unmatched synergy. Trophy opens with explosive energy, and Mass The Difference elevates the song further with his exceptional talent, proving why he’s one of the most versatile musicians in the game, and the seamless blend of sharp lyricism and soccer references makes it a track you can’t skip.

The middle of the project features two gems: ‘SECOND PERFECT DEMO’ and ‘SLEEPLESS’. On ‘SECOND PERFECT DEMO’, Trophy slows things down, allowing his introspective lyrics to shine: “Couple of n*ggas want my head so mangwele mofase/ I’m steady praying to the Lord/ Nkase bone le kase, ma/ I ain’t afraid to die ’cause my dreams still alive.”

The beat switches halfway through, and Trophy shows off his versatility with fire raps that reaffirm his purpose as an artist. ‘SLEEPLESS’, a love song, shifts the tempo of the project, combining heartfelt lyrics with a smooth top-notch production. Trophy’s vulnerability adds a personal touch, leaving listeners wondering about the muse behind the track.

The album closes strong with ‘THING$ CHANGE’ featuring Kane Keid and ‘WHEREABOUT$’ featuring G-Tech 2Bit. Kane Keid, a rising star with cosigns from Benny The Butcher and The Alchemist, delivers a high-energy verse that reminds us of South Africa’s rich lyrical talent. Trophy matches his intensity, proving he can hold his own with the best. ‘WHEREABOUT$’ sees G-Tech 2Bit deliver a cold, standout feature, wrapping up the album on a high note.

Overall, IAIN [An Extended Version] is a testament to Trophy’s growth and artistry. This project takes you deep into his world, offering a mix of emotional storytelling, lyrical brilliance and stellar production. Though it dropped months ago, it’s worth revisiting for anyone who appreciates authentic hip-hop. This is a project that demands your attention and your ears.
