In the true spirit of Mandela Day, Sony Music Africa teamed up with the Break-Through Centre in Katlehong to turn 67 minutes into a lasting impact, reminding young people that hope is built through community, opportunity and showing up.

Driven by the generosity of its employees, Sony Music Africa made a meaningful donation to the centre, with Kwesta matching the staff contribution through a personal donation in support of the initiative.

Nestled in the heart of Katlehong, the Break-Through Centre has become a pillar of the community, providing children and young people with educational support, mentorship and a safe space to grow. For Kwesta, whose roots run deep in the township, the visit was far more than a Mandela Day activation—it was personal.

“It’s a little personal for me because my father was raised in Zonkizizwe and I was raised in Siluma and Mavimbela. The communities that build centres like Break-Through Centre are the same communities that raised me. Being able to give back and bring hope to young people from these communities means a lot,” said Kwesta.

But the day wasn’t just about donations. Sony Music Africa employees spent time connecting with the children through conversation, games and shared experiences, creating moments that went far beyond financial support.

Music naturally took centre stage as Mlindo The Vocalist, Dynamic Duo and Tumi Musiq joined the celebration, giving back through live performances, personal stories and meaningful interactions. Their presence transformed the day into a memorable experience, using music as a tool to inspire, uplift and encourage the next generation to dream beyond their circumstances.

“Mandela Day reminds us that meaningful change starts with ordinary people choosing to make an extraordinary difference,” said Chenayi Mukaro, People Experience Manager at Sony Music Africa. “Seeing our employees come together alongside Kwesta and our artists is a powerful reflection of what can be achieved when we unite behind a shared purpose. We are proud to use the power of music, our people and our platform to make a meaningful difference in the communities that continue to shape South African culture.”

The initiative reflects Sony Music Africa’s continued commitment to investing in the communities that have shaped the country’s rich musical landscape. Through partnerships with organisations like the Break-Through Centre, the label continues to extend its impact beyond entertainment—creating opportunities, fostering connection and leaving a lasting legacy where it matters most.

As South Africans honoured Nelson Mandela’s legacy through acts of service, the day at the Break-Through Centre served as a reminder that real change doesn’t only come through grand gestures. Sometimes, it starts with showing up, giving back and inspiring the next generation to believe in what’s possible.
