South African hip-hop pioneer, actor and cultural activist Zuluboy is officially back. After a two-year hiatus from the local music scene, the legendary lyricist marks his return with “Freedom”—a poignant new single released in honour of Nelson Mandela International Day.
The release signals Zuluboy’s first official offering since relocating to New York City in 2024. Armed with a renewed global perspective but grounded in his South African roots, the veteran emcee returns with a record that pays tribute to the enduring legacy of Nelson Mandela while speaking to the ongoing pursuit of freedom, dignity and opportunity.
“Freedom is a powerful anthem of resilience, hope and self-determination that speaks to the enduring strength of the human spirit,” says Zuluboy. “The timing of the release on Mandela Day is deeply intentional. The dream of the opportunities that freedom brings is one worth fighting for and keeping alive, just as Nelson Mandela did.”
While fans may have missed his presence on the release calendar, Zuluboy insists his passion for music never faded.
“The significance of my return is my love for music. I never stopped recording. I make music because I love it—it’s something I hear and feel. Whether I’m releasing it or not, it’s something I’ll never stop doing.”
