With the 13th pick in the 2026 WNBA Draft, the Atlanta Dream select Madina Okot from the University of South Carolina. This is more than just a win for Kenya; it’s a historic moment for the entire African continent.
From starting her basketball journey just six years ago to now becoming a first-round WNBA draft pick, Madina Okot’s story is one of raw talent, incredible hard work, and relentless dedication.
Madina Okot Mullah (born August 23, 2004) is a professional basketball player from Kenya. She was selected as the 13th overall pick by the Atlanta Dream in the 2026 WNBA Draft. During her college career, she played for the University of South Carolina under legendary coach Dawn Staley. Okot has also represented Kenya internationally on both the 3×3 and 5×5 national teams. In 2022, she was named the Most Promising Girl at the Kenyan Sports Personality of the Year Awards.
On being drafted, Madina said:
“This is not just for me. It is for all of Kenya, and I hope it makes us believe we belong at any stage.”
Her transfer to South Carolina between her junior and senior years made headlines, with Okot citing her admiration for Dawn Staley and the program’s proven ability to develop WNBA talent.
Africa, this is one of our own making it to the biggest stage. The same energy and support we gave her throughout college and while representing Kenya on the FIBA 3×3 U23 team, it’s time to show that same support now as she begins her professional journey in the WNBA.
Let’s celebrate her. Let’s back her. Madina Okot is just getting started.
