The Basketball Africa League (BAL), through its BAL4HER platform, partnered with two-time WNBA All-Star and BAL Ambassador Chiney Ogwumike and her foundation, Queens of the Continent, to host a groundbreaking three-day program in Lagos, Nigeria (August 29–31).
Marking the first-ever BAL4HER initiative in Nigeria, the event combined on-court training, mentorship, and leadership development, with activities led by Ogwumike, Nigeria Men’s National Team Head Coach Abdulrahman Mohammed, BAL staff, and Senegalese player Fatou Diagne.
The program kicked off with a networking and leadership evening for 100 young women, including 20 U23 athletes and female sports professionals. The session featured panel discussions on “Celebrating Nigeria’s AfroBasket Champions & the Rise of Women’s Basketball” and “Sport as a Pathway to Opportunity and Impact in Africa,” with insights from leading voices such as Aituaje Aina Vivian Ebele Iruob, Chioma Omeruah, Omawumi Megbele, Taye Adeniy, and Tega Dominic.
On Day 2, 20 U23 athletes participated in an intensive basketball camp, combining skills training, gameplay, and career pathway conversations. Local coaches also benefited from a BAL Advance clinic led by Coach Abdulrahman Mohammed.
The program concluded with a U16 clinic, where 45 girls from local communities trained under the mentorship of U23 players, who passed down both technical skills and life guidance.
The three-day initiative not only strengthened basketball fundamentals but also empowered young athletes to become leaders and role models on and off the court.
