The road to the 2026 Red Bull BC One South Africa National Final is officially underway, with B-Boy Barshie emerging victorious at the Red Bull BC One Cypher Johannesburg on Sunday to secure the first qualifying spot of the season.
Recognised as the world’s most prestigious one-on-one breaking competition, Red Bull BC One brings together the country’s finest breakers in a battle where there are no rehearsed routines or predetermined playlists—just raw skill, creativity, musicality and performance under the watchful eye of an elite judging panel.
For Barshie, the win represented more than just qualification. It was a milestone for a culture that rarely gets opportunities of this scale.
“We don’t really have a lot of competitions like this in South Africa, so this was really good,” he said after claiming the title. “I prepared despite having a busy schedule, and I also really enjoyed watching all the other dancers.”
With Johannesburg now behind him, Barshie isn’t slowing down. His focus has already shifted to the National Final.
“I’m just going to keep training harder,” he said.
On the women’s side, B-Girl Baylie claimed top honours after an impressive showing that saw her battle against the B-Boys throughout the day as the only female competitor in the cypher. Rather than seeing it as a disadvantage, Baylie embraced the challenge.
“It felt necessary to do it. The breaking scene is always changing, so I want to stay in it as much as I can,” she explained.
Competing against the men pushed her physically and mentally—exactly the preparation she believes she’ll need heading into September.
“It teaches you a lot. It pushes my stamina and my power. It prepares me for what I need to get ready for and how I have to get ready.”
With the National Final fast approaching, Baylie’s preparation goes beyond perfecting moves.
“I’m definitely going to focus on my power and my mindset. I want to believe in myself, keep pushing, wake up early, go to bed late and just put the hours in.”
Johannesburg marked the opening chapter of a three-city qualifying tour. The journey continues in East London on 25 July, before wrapping up in Cape Town on 1 August, where the final qualifiers and wildcard entrants will be decided.
Those successful dancers will advance to the Red Bull BC One South Africa National Final, taking place in Cape Town on 6 September 2026, where the country’s top B-Boys and B-Girls will battle for national bragging rights.
The stakes don’t end there. The South African champions will earn the opportunity to represent the country at the Red Bull BC One World Final in Toronto, Canada, on 29 November 2026, where they’ll go head-to-head with the world’s best breakers in pursuit of the ultimate title—Red Bull BC One World Champion.
