Khaya DoomAKU does exactly that with his latest project, Odendaal. This isn’t just an album, it’s a navigation tool. Eleven tracks, five features, and a whole lot of storytelling that walks you through his hood with intention and honesty. Every track is well-written, but one that really stands out is “OD You Broke My Heart.” At first, you might think he’s talking about a person, but the deeper you listen, the more you realise he’s speaking to his hood. It’s personal, it’s layered, and that added snippet/audio just makes it hit even harder, especially for those of us who come from similar kasi environments. That’s how I took it, at least.
Then there’s “Ntshwarele” — a heartfelt letter to his parents. Man… the pen here is something else. Raw emotion, vulnerability, and honesty all wrapped into one. It’s one of those records you don’t just hear, you feel. And just when you think he’s said it all, he closes the album with “Hood Hero.” A perfect outro that ties everything together — identity, struggle, pride. I didn’t even dive into all the songs on purpose… because this is one of those projects you need to experience for yourself.
From the first time I heard him on a record, I knew I was going to be a fan. Then came the co-sign from Pdot O — that’s when it was stamped. We even brought him through to HYPE Sessions for a freestyle, and the response from the Odendaal community? Crazy. When he pulled up on The Tswyza Show, the whole country tapped in.
Now we finally get a full body of work — real stories, real life, straight out of Odendaal. Just to put it into perspective: Odendaalsrus to Welkom is only about 20km — roughly a 15-minute drive. But with this album? That journey feels way bigger.
