There’s a certain kind of hunger that comes from growing up outside the spotlight — the kind that doesn’t wait for validation, but builds its own lane from the ground up. For Newcastle, KZN’s rising voice Tame Tiger, that hunger is the foundation of his sound. Raw, introspective, and driven by an unshakable belief in what’s possible, he represents a new wave of artists redefining what it means to come from the margins of South Africa’s hip-hop scene.

With his latest project UP 2 SOMETHING, Tame Tiger invites listeners into his world — one shaped by ambition, isolation, growth, and the relentless pursuit of something bigger. From high-energy anthems to vulnerable reflections, the tape captures both the mindset and the moment of an artist on the brink.

We caught up with Tame Tiger to unpack the influences behind his sound, the meaning woven into his music, and why this is only the beginning of a much larger story.

In reading your Spotify bio I learned that you are from Newcastle. Can you describe the local hip-hop scene that side?

Yes, I’m from Newcastle, KZN. The scene there isn’t as loud as places like Durban or Joburg, but that’s what made it special. It’s raw, it’s hungry. A lot of artists are creating without resources, so it forces you to be original. Coming from there gave me that underdog mindset, like you have to build your own wave.

When I interview an artist for the first time, I like to get a feel for what they listened to coming up. Who were some of the artists that inspired you growing up?

Growing up I was tapped into a mix of everything from US artists like Travis Scott, Drake, and Future, to local sounds. I was studying how they structure songs, how they carry energy. That’s what shaped how I approach music now.

You have a unique style. Where did that come from and how did you develop it?

My style came from past influences and the music scene in Durban. So I leaned into what felt natural, my tone, my flows, my emotions. Over time it evolved into something people can recognize instantly.

You open up your 2026 drop, UP 2 SOMETHING, with the song ‘INTO THE PARTY’. Why did you choose that song in particular to be the intro to the project?

“INTO THE PARTY” sets the tone. It’s like walking into my world. I wanted the first track to feel like energy, confidence, and arrival like, I’m here now. It’s not just a song, it’s an entrance.

On ‘SKI’ you talk about a piece of advice that your mom gave you. She told you to wear your heart on your sleeve. What does that advice mean?

When my mom said wear your heart on your sleeve, it wasn’t about being soft it was about being real. In music and in life. I don’t hide what I feel. That’s why people connect, because it’s honest.

‘LET IT GO’ is one of my favourite songs on UP 2 SOMETHING. Can you tell me about what inspired the song and why you feel you need to let go?

That song came from a place of growth. Sometimes you outgrow people, situations, even versions of yourself. “Let It Go” is about releasing that weight so you can move forward without anything holding you back.

On the project you talk about people who were pulling you down. Can you tell me about how you deal with people who don’t have the best intentions for you?

Some people project their own limitations onto you. I just stay focused, keep my circle tight, and let success speak for itself.

The songs ‘LONER 5.0’ sees you touch on being a loner. What are some of the advatnags and disadvantages that come with being a loner?

Being a loner has advantages, clarity, focus, self-awareness. You’re not distracted. But at the same time, it can get isolating. You have to be strong mentally because you’re carrying everything on your own.

The song ‘I WISH’ talks how you wish people could see things from your perspective. Why do you feel there is that disconnect with people?

Not everyone sees life the way you do. Especially when you’re chasing something bigger.

I was listening to ‘ANOTHER ONE’ and you sound like you have a level of huger. Seeing as you are more or less at the beginning of your career, can you let us know about your ambitions for your career?

I’m still at the beginning, so the hunger is real. I’m not satisfied. I want global impact — charts, plaques, sold-out shows, everything. This is just the foundation.

‘KEEP ME ALIVE’ sees you talk about people that you have lost. What do those people mean to you?

The song is pushing forward despite not seeing results. ”Do anything to keep me alive, I do anything” I use this track as fuel to keep me going when I have fatigue or not feeling good.

I really enjoy the song ‘HEY, ITS FRIDAY’ because of its energy. Where does that energy come from?

That energy comes from life from moments when everything feels good. I wanted a track that people can just enjoy, forget stress, and live in the moment. I wanted it to feel like Friday.

You swtich up the vibe on the song ‘BUILDING LOVE’. Why did you feel it was necessary switch up the sound at that juncture of the tape?

I didn’t want the project to feel one-dimensional. “Building Love” shows a different side, more vulnerable, more emotional. It balances the tape and shows range.

You round off the project with the song ‘GLENASHEY BEACH’. Where do you leave us on the UP 2 SOMETHING?

That track is like reflection. After everything, it’s calm, it’s clarity. It leaves you with a feeling like the journey doesn’t end here, it’s just the beginning of something bigger.
