One of my favourite things about social media is how effortlessly we plug each other with good music — recommending projects, sharing gems, and putting each other onto new artists. You won’t believe who put me onto this one.
I got a DM from one of my favourite accounts on X (formerly Twitter) saying, “Please, RT.” My response? “I’ll hit you back in 23 minutes.” Not because I was busy, but because I wanted to actually sit with the project first.
And now I’m here to say this: Charles Mak dropped a really solid body of work.
LUV is the name of the project, and it serves as a follow-up to the two-pack of singles he released last year. One of my favourite tracks is “Life Still Good” — a laid-back, Kwaito-inspired record with easy, unforced vocals. Nothing hectic, just beautifully executed. Those K.O–style ad-libs? Super clean.
Then there’s “Rao Tlatsa,” which is pure rap, carrying that unmistakable Vaal influence. This is also one of those projects with hidden features, the kind where the more you listen, the more you start picking up familiar voices tucked into the music.
There’s plenty here to enjoy, but I’ll let you experience it for yourself. Go stream and sit with Charles Mak’s new project, LUV.
