Having previously travelled through cultural capitals such as London, Berlin, Paris, and Amsterdam, Start From Scratch’s arrival in Lagos represented a pivotal moment for both organisations. Anchored by the newly opened HOMECOMING space and powered by AlphaTheta’s world-leading DJ technology, the programme launched with a fully booked first class in September. Additional sessions followed through the end of the year, each oversubscribed and fuelled by a growing community of aspiring DJs across the city.
Designed for complete beginners, the programme introduces participants to the fundamentals of DJing — from beatmatching and blending to creative storytelling, identity, and building a personal sound. The Lagos editions were led by a diverse and forward-thinking group of mentors who reflect the richness of contemporary African music, including Dope Caesar, Weareallchemicals, Honeeay, and collectives such as Dencity, Floss, and Femme Africa. Their involvement fostered an environment rooted in openness, confidence, and community, allowing emerging DJs to learn directly from artists shaping the future of the culture.
Across Europe and Africa, HOMECOMING has collaborated with a global network of mentors, including Major League DJz, DJ Spinall, Gina Jeanz, Donnie Sunshine, Dare Balogun, and Kitty Amor. The success of the Lagos programme not only strengthens this international ecosystem but also reinforces HOMECOMING’s long-term commitment to talent development across the African continent.
What has taken shape in Lagos is more than a series of workshops. It marks the beginning of a sustained investment in DJ culture, creative infrastructure, and grassroots ecosystems in Africa. With AlphaTheta’s continued support, Start From Scratch is evolving into a platform that opens doors, builds technical and creative skills, and creates meaningful pathways for new voices to emerge.
Building on the momentum of the 2025 editions, HOMECOMING and AlphaTheta are now developing an expanded Start From Scratch programme for 2026. With plans for more cities, more sessions, and a deeper educational offering, the next phase aims to ensure that access, opportunity, and creative growth continue to expand for the next generation of African DJs.
