Ever since I was introduced to Trophy, one thing has been consistent: he never drops mid. His latest project, Settle For More, is proof of just how good he is and how he continues to evolve as an artist.
The Pretoria-based rapper dropped the project last Friday, following it up with an intimate listening session that I had the privilege of attending. The energy in the room confirmed what the music already made clear — this is one of the strongest hip-hop/rap projects to come out in recent memory.
Settle For More carries 10 tracks, a deliberate choice that keeps the project focused and impactful. Trophy keeps the features minimal — Slim Dumpie, K3YZ, and Khaya Doomaku — allowing his voice and artistry to remain the centrepiece. From the opening track, Trophy sets the tone, once again referencing his grandmother, a recurring theme in his music that shows how deeply personal his art is.
What’s refreshing on this project is how he flips the narrative around fathers. While many rappers often dwell on absent father figures, Trophy takes a different approach by expressing love and respect for his dad — something we don’t hear often enough in hip-hop.
Standout tracks include “Keep Your Penny,” which highlights Trophy’s sharp lyricism and storytelling. Beyond the bars, his use of skits and sound clips throughout the project adds texture and context, creating a full listening experience rather than just a playlist of songs.
This project isn’t just music — it’s another statement from Trophy. It’s the sound of an artist who knows exactly who he is and where he’s headed.
Do yourself a favor: go check out Settle For More.
