The single pack opens on a sombre note with the song ‘free me’. The song speaks about the memories Shalate cherishes with a loved one. The downtempo production of the single speaks to the message of the song, where she is asking to be freed, presumably from the memories.
‘xa ungekho’ switches things up by taking a slight upturn, relatively speaking, of course. The song sees Shalate speak on how she laments how a relationship ended. I enjoyed how emotive she sounded on the chorus of the song, especially towards the tail end of the song. I think that her strength lies in being able to deliver a performance that perfectly suits the production of the song.
The single pack closes on the song ‘broken pieces’. I particularly enjoyed the flow she had on this song. Again, I feel like she found the perfect pocket to flow on the production with, matching its energy. Overall, this is a wonderfully executed single pack and I can’t wait to hear more from Shalate. Listen to xa ungekho below.
