South African singer-songwriter Nanette has released Painfully Happy, a deeply personal and emotionally charged body of work that firmly positions her as one of the most important new voices in contemporary music. The album marks a defining moment in her journey—an artist stepping fully into her purpose, her power, and her pain.

At its core, Painfully Happy embodies a contradiction that many will recognise: the quiet ache that lingers beneath success, applause, and outward fulfilment. It captures the duality of joy and sorrow existing in the same breath—a sonic reflection of modern life in all its complexity.

“I feel like this project is a reflection of the state I’m in right now. And maybe that’s something many people can relate to,” Nanette shares. “Painfully Happy is a mix of extreme lows and really nice highs. It represents how ironic life can be. We can be going through non-stop success, achieving goals, making the dream work, but there might still be that void. Some people might still feel incomplete even after receiving everything they thought they wanted.”Across its tracklist, Nanette balances light and shadow with remarkable grace. “I’m Not Psycho” cuts through with cinematic defiance. “Abazali” is a tender tribute to her parents and elders who shaped her. “Suddenly”, the focus track, shines with upliftment and radiant vocal warmth. Together, these moments create a soundscape that feels both deeply rooted in South African sonic traditions and boldly global in outlook.

The album plays like a diary yet unfolds like a cinematic soundtrack, touching on themes of identity, womanhood, ambition, faith, and the delicate art of holding it all together. Nanette’s power lies not only in her voice but in her honesty. Her writing is fearless and reflective. Her delivery is soft yet commanding. She has crafted a sound that moves seamlessly between R&B, Amapiano, and Afropop influences—while always sounding unmistakably like herself.

Since debuting with Bad Weather and solidifying her presence with The Waiting Room, Nanette has built a reputation as one of South Africa’s most compelling young artists. Collaborations with Kelvin Momo, Nasty C, Blxckie, and Tellaman have shown her range—but Painfully Happy is the moment where she brings it all together and makes it her own.

At every step, Nanette has walked closely with her fans—affectionately known as The Nesties. Their presence has been more than supportive; it has been essential. From intimate listening sessions to daily digital interactions, she has created a world where vulnerability feels safe and connection is everything. This project is as much theirs as it is hers.

In the build-up to the album’s release, Nanette has owned the conversation this Women’s Month: delivering a standout live performance at Your Weekly Touch Up, gracing the cover of Apple Music’s ALPHA, landing on Spotify’s Fresh Finds cover, and leading multiple media features and takeovers.

Painfully Happy is more than an album—it’s a statement of arrival. Nanette isn’t asking for attention. She is commanding it, track by track. With a sound that is emotionally grounded and sonically expansive, she is not the next big thing. She is the now.
