Maturity is a beautiful thing, not only in life, but in music. Every artist’s journey to reaching their musical maturity looks different. With that being said, I was particularly delighted when I heard Flow Jones Jr.’s latest single, “Lane”. The single takes a downtempo turn in comparison to the aggressive, hard-hitting brand of rap we have come to adore him for. “Lane” sees Flow Jones Jr. talk about a myriad of personal truths and feelings he is currently wrestling with such as his dependents, his work ethic and making his family proud through his musical career. With lines like “The nights you feeling lazy, you gon’ pay for it”, it is difficult not to feel a deeper sense of connection with the artist because he is letting us into his innermost thoughts. On a personal level, I love this new sonic direction that Flow Jones Jr. is taking on this single because it allows an underrated aspect of his artistry to shine through, which is his pen. Oftentimes, his penmanship is drowned out by the overall uptempo vibe he typically presents himself in.

If these are the vibes we will be receiving from his upcoming offering, Greedy, we are in for a musical feast. Listen to “Lane” below.
