In a bold and sonically masterful new release, acclaimed South African rapper and generational lyricist L Tip delivers “For Kwaal” — the latest single from his forthcoming album Fox Phakathi (dropping later this year). The project is so conceptually rich and culturally significant that it earned the backing of the SAMRO Music Creation Support Fund, a rare nod that affirms both its artistry and impact.
The SAMRO Music Creation Support Fund, an initiative of the Southern African Music Rights Organisation, invests in original works that carry cultural and artistic weight. By awarding Fox Phakathi this funding, SAMRO has enabled L Tip to bring to life an ambitious sonic and storytelling vision that blends South African identity, spiritual reclamation, and sharp lyricism into a cinematic listening experience.
The Fox Phakathi story began with “WHOA”, introduced through a striking short film–music video that unveiled the album’s mysterious protagonist and themes of transformation, power, and identity. It was followed by “Waar Was Jy”, a hard-hitting collaboration with Zambian–South African hip-hop pioneer Yung Verbal. Now, with “For Kwaal”, the saga reaches its most potent chapter yet.
Rooted in South African township vernacular, “Kwaal” refers to jealousy, hate, or hidden resentment — the venomous energy projected by haters and abathakathi (witches or negative forces). But instead of running from it, L Tip turns it into fuel.
“I saw you bottled up your jealousy, I took a sip… and poured a glass for all my people. Get a taste of this… Raise a glass up For Kwaal,” he declares on the chorus — transforming spiritual warfare into a toast to endurance, evolution, and victory.
Self-produced by L Tip, the track pulses with celebratory energy and cinematic depth, pairing a triumphant bounce with his unmistakable cadence. The result is a visceral listening experience — reflective, defiant, and empowering.
The second verse also holds one of L Tip’s most vivid autobiographical moments: the “studio in a box” story. He recalls walking away from minimum-wage jobs, pooling money to buy a portable studio, and carrying it through the streets of Braamfontein to the taxi rank with two close friends. That journey eventually led to Kempton Park, where the seeds of his artistry were planted — a testimony to resilience and vision.
With Fox Phakathi, SAMRO’s Creation Fund is supporting more than an album. It’s preserving language, amplifying authentic storytelling, and bridging heritage with modern expression. For L Tip, the recognition affirms the cultural weight of his work and ensures the project will be delivered with the depth and quality it deserves.
“For Kwaal” is now available on all major streaming platforms. The full Fox Phakathi album is set for release later this year.
