It’s been a while since Limpopo had a rapper who truly united the entire province behind them—and this time, it’s someone proudly rapping in Sepedi with fluency and heart. Sepedi hasn’t had much representation in the mainstream, but Maleboo is set to change that narrative.
Two years ago, I wrote an article highlighting Limpopo rappers to watch out for—and Maleboo made that list. Although the article received some backlash at the time, it’s great to see him proving the doubters wrong and making serious waves in the game. He’s not just holding it down for himself—he’s pushing beyond boundaries for the culture.
On March 28th, we woke up to a fully Sepedi rap album from this talented and hard-working artist. Titled Lesole Ntweng, the 15-track project takes listeners on an emotional and motivational journey, inspiring people to strive for more in life. With features from Flash-T, Sannere, Shibu Molomo, and Tribby Wadi Bhoza, the album is stacked with quality collaborations and stands as a solid body of work.
The second track, “Badimo”, is a spiritual ode to his ancestors, who he credits for guiding him on this journey—his way of showing deep respect and gratitude. Another standout, “Bophelo”, explores life’s hardships and the resilience it takes to push through. One line that hits hard is: “Ke kwele Matome o rekile koloi, lenna kea duma go le dira motlotlo”—which translates to “I heard Matome bought a car, and I also want to make you proud,” a heartfelt message to his mother. It’s a sentiment many young people can relate to—wanting to make their parents proud.
This album doesn’t just inspire—it also delivers pure lyricism. Tracks like “Molwantwa” showcase Maleboo’s pen game, bar for bar. Another notable joint, “Mpho Yaka”, addresses the challenges and personal struggles many rappers face in the industry.
Lesole Ntweng is more than just an album—it’s a statement. It introduces many to Limpopo’s rich culture and the emerging wave of Pedi Rap. My advice? Pay close attention to Maleboo. Lesole Ntweng is the album to check out—it might just be the beginning of a new era.
