Drew XL, born Andrew Tebogo Magombo, makes a long-awaited return to music with his dope EP, WHAT CAN I SAY?—a project that feels overdue after his abrupt departure from rap in 2020 to pursue a 9-to-5. Known for his viral freestyles on social media, Drew XL had already cemented his name in the hearts and ears of many. Now, five years later, he finally surrenders to the calling he’s resisted for so long.
After crossing paths with rapper and producer MalcomZee—who produced the entire project—Drew XL knew it was time to create an EP for his city, Polokwane, and his hometown, the township of Seshego. The project dives deep into the struggles of a young man navigating life in Seshego’s once-notorious streets.
On the opening track, “HOW CAN I SLEEP”, he paints a raw picture of unemployment and the suffocating sense of worthlessness it brings, particularly for young South African men facing societal pressures. This theme continues on “NOTHING COMES EASY” and “ESCAPING THE NORTH”, where he explores different perspectives on struggle but delivers them with an unwavering confidence in overcoming adversity.
Weaving between Sepedi and English, Drew XL tells stories that reflect his roots, culture, and personal experiences. The EP balances pain and triumph—most notably in “SKHWAMA”, where he vividly manifests a life he longs for, with Ms Kulie’s soulful vocals amplifying the emotion.
As the project progresses, “NEW ME” serves as a powerful mantra before he reminds everyone of his lyrical prowess. On “STRUU/THOUGHT ABOUT IT”, he touches on a near-death experience involving a loved one, a moment that ultimately reignited his passion for music.
Closing on a melancholic note, the EP leaves the listener with unanswered questions—fittingly titled WHAT CAN I SAY?—a reflection of Drew XL’s journey, struggles, and unfiltered honesty.
