Road to Bassline Fest:  Live Music Lab & Rhythmic Clash

Bassline Live is calling all aspirant young unemployed trainees based in Johannesburg who want to learn and work in the live music industry to apply for the Live Music Lab program in March 2025. The Live Music Lab educates trainees about everything behind the scenes of the artists business. The deadline for Live Music Lab applications is 24 February 2025. The Rhythmic Clash is a call for aspiring musicians, bands, and DJs to apply for the chance to perform at the Bassline Fest in May 2025, Deadline for Rhythmic Clash applications is 28 February 2025. LIVE MUSIC LAB

The Live Music Lab is a career development initiative that was co-founded in 2024 by Bassline and The French Institute of South Africa (IFAS). Due to the success of the iterations in, Johannesburg, Cape Town and Maseru the Live Music Lab will now become a core Bassline training program for young art practitioners who want to learn everything behind the scenes of the live music industry.

Live Music Lab 2025 is brought to you by Bassline and the National Arts Council (NAC) celebrating a long relationship of support and collaborations uplifting local artists and continuously shaping the live music industry and its national success. “In 2025 the first Live Music Lab program training will begin in March with the call-to-action opening on the 15th of January and closing on the 24th of February, 10 aspiring music industry trainees will be selected to be a part of this journey.” Says Brad Holmes of Bassline Live.

 

“The program is designed to incubate 10 youths preparing them with theoretical and practical events and live music experience. and working on the Bassline Fest in May and the Fete De La Musique on the 21st of June.” By the end of this program, trainees will be ready to kick off a career in a wide range of areas in the music industry:

Live Music Lab call for applications

This limited opportunity is open to proactive youths based in township communities and central Johannesburg who are interested in gaining skills in event management, concert promotion, stage and backstage management, marketing within the music industry, and technical production.

If you answer “YES” to the questions below, then this developmental opportunity is for you:

What to expect

Trainees will participate in sessions introducing them to the music business.” This will broadly cover South African live music development and an overview of the live music ecosystem, the different career opportunities in the sector, and how to network effectively with music industry professionals.” Holmes explains.

These sessions will be followed by training in focused modules chosen based on the organic strengths and interests of the trainees. Detailed in-depth knowledge of the ecosystem will be gained from an experienced professional, paired with the chance of shadowing professionals in their different functions on the day and in the build-up to the events.

How to Apply

Applications will open on 15 January and close on 24 February 2025 or until the first 100 applications are received.

Organise your responses offline first, on paper, and identify a specific function you would like to work in and the type of company you would like to work for. This will help you with the compilation of your 350-word motivation (see form).Video record your pitch (presentation) on a cellular device with decent video quality. Selected program participants will be notified on the 28th of February 2025. If you have not heard anything from the Live Music Lab team by the 7th of March 2025, your application was unsuccessful.

Note: Selections will be made in line with Bassline Lives gender targets having a 70% presence of female participation in the program.

RHYTHMIC CLASH

Rhythmic Clash brought to you by Bassline.

Applications open on the 15th of February and close on the 24th of March

The Rhythmic Clash is a new Bassline initiative that will provide a platform for emerging bands in the Afro-Pop, Afro-Folk, Afro-Punk, Afro-Jazz, and Afro-House genres. Two bands from each genre will then be selected to perform at the Bassline Fest on 24 and 25 of May. This opportunity is not just open to bands, but also to musicians, instrumentalists, and DJs. This program is another initiative aimed at nurturing young talent and allowing them to grow and become recognized in the live music market, we not only prioritize our audience members and partners we also support and uplift our existing and upcoming artists.

Selected Bands will be set to perform at the Rhythmic Clash. Two bands will then be selected from each genre and chosen to perform at the Bassline Fest 2025. The selected bands will be notified on 21 March 2025. If you have not heard anything from the Bassline team by 4 April 2025, your application was unsuccessful.

Bassline Fest 2025

Constitutional Hill 24 & 25 May 2025

Taking place on 24 & 25 May 2025 at Constitutional Hill with 4 immaculate stages, this festival guarantees a spectacular showcase of music, culture, and heritage, celebrating the richness of the African identity. Specially curated for our sophisticated, educated, urban, curious, creative, innovative, progressive, engaged, culturally-savvy, thought leaders, trendsetting, socially-conscious, and globally connected audience members.

The festival takes place on Saturday, 24th and Sunday 25th of May, attendees can look forward to a full day of electrifying performances from genres such as Afro-Pop, Afro-Folk, Afro-Soul, Afro-Punk, and Afro-House, culminating in a Sunday Jazz showcase that brings a fresh, soulful sound to the Fest.
