Spotify is thrilled to unveil its GLOW South Africa playlist, part of its global GLOW initiative dedicated to celebrating LGBTQIA+ artists year-round. With this new addition, Spotify reinforces its commitment to uplifting queer voices in South Africa, not just during Pride Month but every day.
Data shows South Africans are already embracing the global GLOW playlist, with streams up by 57% year-on-year in cities like Johannesburg, Pretoria, and Cape Town. Homegrown queer talent, including Angie oeh, Dee Traits, and Lelowhatsgood, has already been spotlighted on the playlist, bringing local representation to the forefront. Phiona Okumu, Spotify’s Head of Music for Sub-Saharan Africa, emphasized, “We’re committed to ensuring that queer artists have the visibility and amplification they deserve, all year round.”
Spotify’s dedication to the LGBTQIA+ community extends beyond playlists; partnerships like the recent album collaboration with South African icon Thandiswa Mazwai and events such as the Mother of Music showcase in Cape Town further highlight their long-term investment in the local queer music scene. Celebrating GLOW South Africa’s launch, Spotify hosted an activation on October 19 to showcase local queer talent.
The GLOW South Africa playlist reflects Spotify’s ongoing mission to amplify queer voices within South Africa’s rich musical landscape.
