In a conversation with Lula Odiba, we delve into her involvement with Nedbank YouthX and her thoughts on youth empowerment, mentorship and the challenges young South Africans face today.

What does being involved in an initiative like YouthX mean to you?
It is about showcasing the opportunities for young South Africans to follow their dreams and unlock their full potential.

What do you think sets Nedbank YouthX apart from other youth empowerment programmes in South Africa?
YouthX has multiple elements that bring the purpose to life. From experiences to financial support and mentorship, it is an opportunity for us to not only celebrate young South Africans for the changes they are making but also to connect the youth to like-minded people, giving them access to the resources and inspiration they need to unlock their passions.

How does Nedbank YouthX aim to help young South Africans realise their potential?
YouthX is a movement designed to uplift, develop and unlock the youth’s potential through an exchange programme powered by Nedbank. The YouthX Awards are a key component, giving aspiring entrepreneurs the platform and opportunity to catapult their careers. As a country, we need to drive change and make a positive impact, which is exactly what Nedbank wants to achieve through the initiative.

What stands out for you in the YouthX platform?
Music is a big part of my identity and passion, so naturally, the YX24 festival stands out for me. But it goes deeper than that because the festival is about more than just music – YX24 transcends the boundaries of a mere festival. It symbolises the strength of youth, innovation and creativity. The festival is dedicated to inspiring, empowering and celebrating excellence and the outstanding accomplishments of South African youths.

What advice would you give to young people looking to participate in Nedbank YouthX or similar initiatives?
If you want to join Nedbank YouthX or similar initiatives:

Be yourself: stand out by embracing your uniqueness.Get involved: participate in events to connect with others.Find a mentor: learn from experienced people.Collaborate: work with others to spark new ideas.Stay curious: keep learning about your community.Welcome feedback: use it to improve your ideas.Set goals: know what you want and plan to achieve it.

These steps can help you make a real impact!

What challenges do you think South African youths face in achieving success, and how does Nedbank YouthX help address these?
South African youths face challenges like high unemployment, limited access to education and a lack of mentorship. Nedbank YouthX helps by offering financial support, mentorship and connections to peers and industry leaders, empowering young people to overcome these barriers and achieve their goals.

How has your journey as a public figure influenced your approach to mentoring and supporting youths through this platform?
Having a bit of a spotlight comes with the responsibility of being responsible yourself. I’ve had to learn how to articulate my values and beliefs with like-minded people who see me as an example of what they would like to be in the future. I’m excited to collaborate with Nedbank, which supports my beliefs of financial security, in helping other young, ambitious South Africans.

What can we expect from Nedbank YouthX in the future, and how can young people stay connected with the initiative?
In the future, Nedbank YouthX will likely expand its programmes with more mentorship and resources for young people. To stay connected, follow them on social media and join events. That way, you’ll always be in the loop!
