After a hiatus, the UnKut Hiphop Awards are officially back for the 2025 edition, with a renewed focus on their founding mission: celebrating and elevating Kenyan hip hop. Under the theme “Africa’s Hip Hop Lives Here,” this year’s awards will go back to the basics, spotlighting the vibrant rap culture that has surged in both popularity and influence across Kenya.
This revival comes at a pivotal moment. While the local hip-hop scene is thriving online with massive youth-driven digital success, the industry still faces structural challenges. The UnKut Awards aim to provide a professional platform that recognizes talent, amplifies voices, and cements hip hop’s role as a cultural force beyond music.
The awards have a proven track record of identifying and nurturing artists who go on to dominate the scene. Past winners include:
Wakadinali – recognised in 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2023, now the most-streamed Kenyan hip-hop act on Spotify with over 46M lifetime streams.
Khaligraph Jones – recipient of the 2020 Honorary Award and 2023 winner, continuing his reign as one of Kenya’s top artists.
Trio Mio – who won Breakthrough Artist of the Year in 2021, later collaborating with international acts.
Female trailblazers like Silverstone Barz and Femi One, both past winners, remain at the forefront of defining female rap in the region.
This year marks a strategic partnership with Kijivu Solutions, a Nairobi-based marketing agency known for its work with Betika Kenya and the Burger & Pizza Festival. Together, UnKut and Kijivu aim to elevate the experience of the awards, from branding to activations.
