HYPE fam, a whole lot of dope music has dropped thus far. We thought why not highlight some of the best releases and our list is a good mix of established and up-and-coming artists. Let us know which release you think deserved to be on the list. In no particular order, see the list below.
Yung Tyran – Off Cuts
With a tape titled OFF CUTS: The Mixtape, one wouldn’t expect much of it because it’s clearly throwaways, however, that isn’t the case with this tape at all. The tape opens with the atmospheric “ICEMAN” which showcases the best of Yung Tyran on both the rapping and singing front. Other highlights include “CHOSEN” with Loki., “BITTERSWEET” with Ben September and of course the iconic outro that is “DESTINY’S CHILD”
K.Keed – Bite The Bullet
As far as debut albums go, K.Keed’s Bite The Bullet belongs in the upper echelons alongside an album like 25K’s Pheli Makveli. The album is complete in every sense. It carries a clear narrative that is explored over a multitude of soundscapes. HYPE’s personal highlights include “Dilemma” with A-Reece, “Imposter Syndrome” and “Year 24” with Nasty C, amongst others.
Ginger Trill – Because I Said So
With his recent singing to [STAY LOW], it was all but a guarantee that Ginger Trill’s offering under the label would be impeccable. As far as the art of rap goes, Ginger Trill has always been a name that is held in high regard and Because I Said So carries a classic feel in its execution. With a relatively limited amount of songs, the offering brings out the best of the unofficial duo of ‘Shooter Trill’ – a combination the game didn’t know it needed.
Lowfeye – Imibuzo
The Qwellers have definitely made their presence felt in the game and one of the crew members, Lowfeye, released an eloquently produced offing in Imibuzo. The offering is a picture of artist development with the artist bringing forth a sound that is sonically mature. Sonically, the EP carries a toned-down hue which sets the stage for Lowfeye’s emotive vocal performance. The HYPE teams’ favourite songs are “Poland” with LaCabra & Blxckie as well as “Pressure” with Anzo & Lolli Native.
Yanga Chief – Lord Faku
Lord Faku made a huge splash upon release and with “What If?” performing extremely well on the charts, it was a no-brainer to include the album. The 17-track album is being touted as Yanga Chief’s best work. From the onset, the album oozes quality and is suited for those with an eloquent taste palette for music. Sonically, the offering is diverse with a multitude of sounds being explored.
Money Badoo – MSRYLUV$CMPNY
Money Badoo’s second tape MSRYLUV$CMPNY sees Money Badoo take a welcomed tenure in her musical journey by offering us something that is completely different from both a sonic and narrative point of view. The tape is highlighted by the growth of Money Badoo with her exploring the depths of her innermost thoughts and emotions. Our personal favourites are “PARAFFIN” with Sastii and Sauwcy as well as “WAKE UP” with BabyDaiz and Mashbeatz.
Trophy – CROSSROADS
CROSSROADS is the latest EP from Trophy and what an offering it is. The EP carries a classic hue and sees Trophy narrate his inner thoughts throughout the album. Armed with a skilled pen and an equally adept flow, Trophy brings out the best of his arsenal of weaponry on CROSSROADS.
Sastii – Supa Señorita
As the title of the EP suggests, it’s about love, and he stays true to that sound in his execution on the EP. The song ‘Supa Señorita’, sees him introduce the downtempo style of production that is in stark contrast to what we have become accustomed to from Sastii. Overall, from a thematic point of view, Sastii delivered at a high level and signals that Sastii still has more to offer llisteners when it comes to his musical journey. x
Leo Brown & Rillo Beats
Partnering with a producer for the release of a tape can never be a bad idea. Leo Brown and Rillo Beats teamed up for beauty in disaster and what an incredible offering it is. The chemistry between the two makes for a palatable listen with Leo Brown expertly balancing song construction with introspective lyrics. Despite Leo Brown still being in the infancy of his career, his quality is there for all to see.
