South African hip-hop has evolved significantly over the years. How would you describe the current soundscape, and where do you see it heading in 2025?
African hip-hop has grown into a vibrant and diverse ecosystem that fuses traditional African sounds with global hip-hop trends. The current soundscape is characterized by a blend of Trap, alternative hip-hop infused with local elements like kwaito. Artists are increasingly using vernacular languages and storytelling to reflect the lived realities of South Africans, creating a sound that is uniquely local yet globally appealing. In 2025, I see South African hip-hop further embracing its hybrid identity.
I mean Artists are already pushing boundaries by experimenting with cross-genre collaborations, incorporating more indigenous instruments and rhythms. International collaborations will also grow, positioning South African hip-hop as a global force.
As a DJ, what role do you believe you play in shaping the direction of hip-hop in South Africa?
As a hip-hop DJ, I see myself as a cultural curator and bridge-builder, playing a vital role in shaping the direction of South African hip-hop. My role involves showcasing the diversity within hip-hop, while keeping the essence of the genre alive. By creating platforms for emerging artists, curating and hosting events, and engaging audiences through live sets, I aim to celebrate the richness of hip-hop culture and its ability to tell authentic South African stories. Balancing hip-hop’s essence with the rise of genres like Amapiano requires adaptability and a deep understanding of both audiences and artistry. Collaborating with artists from different genres also fosters cross-pollination, keeping hip-hop relevant and evolving within the broader South African music landscape.
With amapiano and other genres dominating, how do you balance preserving hip-hop’s essence while staying relevant in today’s music scene?
What has been the standout moment of 2025 for you so far, whether it’s a set you played, an event you hosted, or a personal milestone?
The standout moment of 2024 for me was headlining at the biggest HIP-HOP festival in Africa (Back To The City), where I performed on the Main Stage. The energy from the crowd was electric, and seeing people from different backgrounds vibing to my set reminded me why I love being a DJ.
Another personal milestone was curating and hosting a hip-hop showcase that featured South African HipHop artists. The event not only highlighted immense talent in the local scene but also created a platform for artists to network and share their stories. On a personal note, releasing my first collaborative EP titled L.O.V.E (LIVING ON VALUED ENERGY) which is amazing it peaked #4 All genres on iTunes first day of release.

Yes, 2024 has been a monumental year for South African hip-hop, with several artists and tracks making a significant impact on the scene. Some highlights include:
Blxckie – He continues to dominate with his versatile sound, moving effortlessly between melodic hooks and hard-hitting bars his track “In the process” featuring amapiano elements, has resonated widely, showcasing how hip-hop can thrive within cross-genre spaces.Loatinover Pounds – Known for his introspective lyrics, his 2024 Album “Pray 4 Pitori” has deepened his reputation as one of the most authentic voices in South African hip-hop. Tracks like “Mamazala” have sparked conversations about artistry and independence in the industry.25K – With his raw storytelling and street-inspired style, 25K has captured the essence of South African township life. His track “Phelibasas” featuring Sjava has become an anthem for resilience and pride in local heritage.

What’s the most memorable crowd reaction you’ve ever experienced during a set, and what track was playing at the time?
The most memorable crowd reaction I’ve ever experienced was during a set at Cotton Fest earlier this year. I dropped “Fe!n”, and the energy in the room was unmatched. As soon as the beat hit, the entire crowd erupted, rapping along every lyric and throwing their hands in the air. The synergy between the audience and the music was so powerful that it felt like the whole space was vibrating with excitement. That moment reminded me of the unifying power of hip-hop. It wasn’t just about the track itself, it was about the connection people felt to the artist, the lyrics, and the vibe. It’s experiences like these that fuel my passion for DJing, knowing I can create unforgettable memories through the music I play.
