Dover Street Market Paris Announces Official Opening Date

Adrian Joffe and Rei Kawakubo have officially announced the opening of Dover Street Market Paris.

Located in the now defunct Association 3537 that has occupied the same place for the past three years, Dover Street Market‘s Parisian chapter occupies the ground and first floors and one of the three basements of the spot, which was previously the Hôtel de Coulanges, between 1627 and 1634. The other two basements as well as the courtyard, are slated to house and entertain art, literary, music and community events. Same as before the second, third and fourth floors will continue to be for the DSMP Brand Development division.

Kawakubo-san has designed the entire store, including the Rose Bakery café. Embodying “New Chaos,” the nature of the design gives those who visit a chance to discover the space as well as the brands and pieces it houses. No clothing will be seen from the outside and there will not be a dedicated space or concessions. The idea of the store is let customers do the work in finding the pieces they want. To celebrate the opening, the store will host an installation and exhibition titled, Comme des Garçons for and by Paolo Roversi. Matty Bovan has also created an installation in the basement.

Located at 35-37, Rue des Francs-Bourgeois, Paris, 75004, Dover Street Market Paris’ opening date is on May 24. Take a look at Rei Kawakubo and Adrian Joffe’s official statement on the new store opening below.

“NEXT DSM is NEW CHAOS

The space asserts itself.
The space is the statement.

20 years ago, we made a new way of being for a shop with the first DSM. Each designer brand space made their statement.
Various spaces mixed together creating chaos.
We ignored the themes of age, gender, lifestyle.
Even now DSM style is strong and there is nothing else like it.

Now, DSMP takes on new challenges.
Each space makes a statement.
It’s like a recital contest within each space.
Each booth exists as a general space, but each of them makes their claim, asserts their difference.
DSMP brings each brand, each designer to each space.

I made this kind of concept within the existing building, and made it feel new.
No clothes are visible from the outside; clothes don’t beckon you nor curry favour.

The fixtures and furniture emphasise the products, and the purpose of space is not just to sell.
It’s to make a comfortable space.
It’s the same way of thinking as all the CDG shops all over the world.” —REI KAWAKUBO

“Twenty years have passed and the time appears to have arrived to open our eighth DSM, including the outpost of DSPM.

For sure it wasn’t planned.

Lau Tzu said “Life is a series of natural and spontaneous changes. Don’t resist them – that only creates sorrow. Let reality be reality. Let things flow naturally forward in whatever way they like.”

He also said “A good traveler has no fixed plans and is not intent on arriving.”

It has been a journey, a magnificent adventure of challenges, obstacles, discoveries and delights. The only aim has ever been to create something new, open minded and borderless.

For sure there has been no map.

Only the trust in accidents and the faith in free thinking have guided us. We have tried to learn from our mistakes and never shied away from taking risks.

We have achieved together a flowerful fearlessness. We have consoled ourselves in our complicit connections and celebrated our unrivaled sense of community.

We have arrived at a place, not a forest nor a plateau, not a valley nor a peak. Just a place with a beautiful view of behind and above. And from this station-location, we try to feel where we go next.

As we grow and expand, it feels at this juncture-point that we should aim at a higher dimension, to deepen what is good, to put our consciousness into our awareness, to plan for more of the unexpected. I don’t know what that means, but I know, that along the way, such a thing as a mistake is impossible: it’s the mere trying to get in sync with evolution-change what counts.

As Lao Tzu also said “To realize that you do not understand is a virtue; Not to realize that you do not understand is a defect.”

DSMP is therefore an experiment in the un-understanding of the next steps in our journey. It will not be only another shop. It is in fact already a building in which we hope to build and open a new pathway ahead, building on everything we have accomplished and daring to tread in the unknown.

A building that already contains a brand development division and spaces to do all kinds of actions to create an energy-synergy syntax.

And then the store itself, wedged between the upper floors and basements of the building, will look different since Rei Kawakubo has designed the whole space. No brand will have their own space.

There will be no event spaces within the modules where the clothes will be housed. Nothing will be seen from the outside of what might become known as the space ship shop.

I don’t want to say any more. Neither does Lao Tzu.

Too many explanations can detract from the own-eye-witnessing. I am impatient for all of you to discover it.” — ADRIAN JOFFE
